1. General information about pumpkin seed oil:

Pumpkin seeds, also known as pepitas, are flat, dark green seeds. Some are encased in a yellow-white husk, although some varieties of pumpkins produce seeds without shells. Like cantaloupe, cucumber. Pumpkins and pumpkin seeds belong to the gourd or Cucurbitaceous family. The most common genus and species name for pumpkin is Cucurbita maxima. Pumpkin seeds are source of minerals like manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, copper and zinc. Also they are rich in protein content especially amino acid tryptophan and vitamin K.

2. History of pumpkin seed oil in medicine:

Pumpkins, and their seeds, were a celebrated food of the Native American Indians who treasured them both for their dietary and medicinal properties. The cultivation of pumpkins spread throughout the world when the European explorers, returning from their journeys, brought back many of the agricultural treasures of the New World. While pumpkin seeds are featured in the recipes of many cultures, they are a special hallmark of traditional Mexican cuisine. Pumpkin seeds have recently become more popular as research suggests that they have unique nutritional and health benefits. Today, the leading commercial producers of pumpkins include the United States, Mexico, India and China. Countries such as Bulgaria, Turkey, Russia and Ukraine have reported that eating a handful of pumpkin seeds is beneficial for the treatment of prostatic hyperplasia. In this condition there is enlargement of the prostate, an organ found encircling the urethra of males.

3. Pumpkin seed oil roles in health :
  • Promote Prostate Health

Benign prostatic hypertrophy, or BPH, is a condition that commonly affects men 50 years and older. BPH involves enlargement of the prostate gland. Pumpkin seeds are considered an alternative treatment for stage 1 and 2 benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In stage 1 BPH, urination is frequent, and causes numerous interruptions of sleep during the night.Stage 2 symptoms indicate bladder function debility, and include urgency and incomplete emptying of the bladder. One of the factors that contributes to BPH is overstimulation of the prostate cells by testosterone and its conversion product, DHT (dihydrotestosterone). Components in pumpkin seed oil appear able to interrupt this triggering of prostate cell multiplication by testosterone and DHT, although the exact mechanism for this effect is still a matter of discussion. The prostate-helpful components found in the oil extracts are definitely found in the seeds;

The carotenoids found in pumpkin seeds, and the omega-3 fats found in pumpkin seeds are also being studied for their potential prostate benefits. Men with higher amounts of carotenoids in their diet have less risk for BPH; Zinc is one further nutrient found in pumpkin seeds that might impact prostate function. The fact that pumpkin seeds serve as a good source of zinc may contribute to the role of pumpkin seeds in support of the prostate.

  • Prevention of Bladder and kidney stones

The seeds may help to reduce childhood incidence of bladder stones in areas where the condition is endemic. A study in Thailand demonstrated that pumpkin seeds reduced oxalcrystalluria (formation of bladder stones due to the accumulation of oxalate crystals) in boys between the ages of 2 and 7, while increasing pyrophosphate, glycosaminoglycans, and potassium values .One theory suggests that the fatty oil content of the seeds, at a 50% concentration, may precipitate diuresis and may be of benefit not only in prostate hyperplasia but also in irritable bladder .In German pediatric medicine, pumpkin seed preparations are used to treat irritable bladder and also enuresis nocturna (bedwetting).Childhood enuresis nocturna and irritable bladder have been treated successfully with pumpkin seed. Trials in Thailand have shown that eating pumpkin seeds can help prevent the most common type of kidney stone, called a calcium oxalate stone.

Pumpkin seeds appear to reduce levels of substances that promote stone formation in the urine and increase levels of substances that inhibit stone formation. The active constituents of pumpkin seeds responsible for this action have not been identified. Approximately 5¬10 grams per day of pumpkin seeds may be needed for kidney stone prevention.

  • Protection of men’s bones
In addition to maintaining prostate health, another reason for older men to make zinc-rich foods, such as pumpkin seeds, a regular part of their healthy way of eating is bone mineral density. Although osteoporosis is often thought to be a disease for which postmenopausal women are at highest risk, it is also a potential problem for older men. Almost 30% of hip fractures occur in men, and 1 in 8 men over age 50 will have an osteoporotic fracture. A study of almost 400 men ranging in age from 45-92 that was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found a clear correlation between low dietary intake of zinc, low blood levels of the trace mineral, and osteoporosis at the hip and spine.
  • Anti-inflammatory benefits in Arthritis
The healing properties of pumpkin seeds have also been recently investigated with respect to arthritis. In animal studies, the addition of pumpkin seeds to the diet has compared favorably with use of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin in reducing inflammatory symptoms. Importantly, though, pumpkin seeds did not have one extremely unwanted effect of indomethacin: unlike the drug, pumpkin seeds do not increase the level of damaged fats (lipid peroxides) in the linings of the joints, a side-effect that actually contributes to the progression of arthritis.
  • A rich source of healthful minerals, proteins and monounsaturated fats
In addition to their above-listed unique health benefits, pumpkin seeds also provide a wide range of traditional nutrients. Food ranking system qualified them as a very good source of the minerals magnesium, manganese and phosphorus, and a good source of iron, copper, protein, and as previously mentioned, zinc. Snack on a quarter-cup of pumpkin seeds and you will receive 46.1% of the daily value for magnesium, 28.7% of the DV for iron, 52.0% of the DV for manganese, 24.0% of the DV for copper, 16.9% of the DV for protein, and 17.1% of the DV for zinc.
  • Lowering cholesterol
Pumpkin seed oil has also been reported in folklore to reduce blood cholesterol concentration. High levels of cholesterol in the blood are associated with chronic illnesses such as hypertension and stroke. While scientific evidence of the effect of pumpkin seed oil on cholesterol concentration in the blood is limited, it is known that including phytosterols, as well as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the diet can significantly lower blood cholesterol levels. Phytosterols are compounds found in plants that have a chemical structure very similar to cholesterol, and when present in the diet in sufficient amounts, are believed to reduce blood levels of cholesterol, enhance the immune response and decrease risk of certain cancers. Phytosterol content of pumpkin seed oil ( 265 mg/100g ) is rather high and can be use for lowering cholesterol and other benefits.

5. Vitamin E:

The term vitamin E describes a family of eight antioxidants. Alpha-tocopherol is the only form of vitamin E that is actively maintained in the human body; therefore, it is the form of vitamin E found in the largest quantities in blood and tissues. Approximately 50 to 85 percent of vitamin E in the diet is absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract by a mechanism similar to that of other fat-soluble vitamins. It enters the bloodstream via the lymph. The vitamin is stored in all the tissues, and the tissue stores can provide protection against the deficiency of this vitamin for long periods. About one-third of the vitamin is excreted in the bile and the balance is excreted in the urine. The main functions of Vitamin E are to help protect the functioning of cells and the intracellular processes.

Vitamin E oxygenates the tissues and reduces the need for oxygen intake markedly. It is essential for normal reproductory functions, fertility, and physical vigour. It prevents unsaturated fatty acids, sex hormones, and fat-soluble vitamins from being destroyed in the body by oxygen. Vitamin E dilates the capillaries and enables the blood to flow freely into blood-deficient muscle tissue, thus strengthening both the tissues and the nerves supplying them. It dissolves blood clots and also prevents their formation. It does not, however, interfere with the normal clotting of blood. It prevents the formation of excessive scar tissues and in some instances, even melts away unwanted scar tissue. It also promotes urine secretion.

Vitamin E is said to be essential for prevention of heart disease, asthma, arthritis, and many other conditions. When applied topically, vitamin E has been known to improve skin moisturization, softness and smoothness and also provide modest photoprotection. Deficiency of vitamin E may lead to degenerative changes in the blood capillaries which, in turn, can lead to heart and lung disease, pulmonary embolism, and a brain stroke. Deficiency of this vitamin may also lead to loss of sexual potency. A prolonged deficiency may lead to reproductive disorders, abortions, miscarriages, male or female sterility, as well as muscular disorders.
